Spring Waffle Decorating

By Katie Wang

Have your parents ever said that breakfast was the most important meal of the day? Well they’re right. However, breakfast doesn’t have to be only the most important meal of the day, it could also be the most fun meal of the day! You can eat many different foods for breakfast, but a very popular one is waffles. You can do almost anything with waffles: eat it with maple syrup, enjoy it with a glob of vanilla ice cream on top, eat it with lots of fruits, or maybe even have it plain! Here are just a few ideas for decorating your waffles. It’s not only delicious, but a whole lot of fun!

Spring is the time when all of the plants wake up from their long winter sleep and start growing again. Making waffles look like flowers is probably something that anyone could think of, but there are many ways to do so. This design is VERY simple and quick, and it’s perfect for a light breakfast!

You will need:

  • 1 waffle
  • 3 strawberries (approximately)
  • Whipped cream

  1. Cut the strawberries in half.
  2. Arrange them in a flower pattern around the center of the waffle.
  3. Spray some whipped cream in the center.

In my opinion, spring is the best season out of the four, but it has one downside: the bugs and insects. Although they may be very annoying and even scary sometimes, there is one particular bug that isn’t, and it looks a lot prettier: the butterfly. There are over 20,000 types of butterflies and each one has their own unique wing pattern. In this design, the butterfly doesn’t have very realistic wings, but it’s still delicious!

You will need:

  • 1 waffle (in halves)
  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate sauce
  • 4 Blueberries

  1. Cut the waffle in half and arrange it so that the flat side faces outwards.
  2. Spray 2 large globs of whipped cream on each “butterfly wing”.
  3. Place a blueberry on each of the globs.
  4. Drizzle chocolate sauce over the entire butterfly.

Valentine’s Day/ Mother’s Day/ Father’s Day

It’s early morning on Mother’s Day and you’ve completely forgotten to do something for her. What do  you do? Suddenly an idea pops into your head: to make breakfast for your mom. You remember reading the Voice K article on making waffles for Mother’s Day and you jump up excitedly to go make waffles for your mother. When she wakes up, you proudly hold a beautiful waffle in front of her and yell, “HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!”. This design is really perfect for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or any other occasion that’s dedicated to a loved one.

You will need:

  • 1 waffle
  • 1 strawberry
  • Whipped cream

  1. Cut the strawberry in half to make a heart shape.
  2. Spray little dots of whipped cream around the heart.

Now you can make three different designs on waffles! These are not the only ways to decorate waffles, as there are MILLIONS of ways. You can even invent your own!

Here’s a basic waffle recipe for those who want to create their own from scratch.

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cups milk
  • 1 tbsp white sugar
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

1. Preheat waffle iron.

2. Beat eggs in a large bowl until fluffy. Beat in all ingredients until smooth.

3. Spray preheated waffle iron with non-stick cooking spray. Pour mix onto the waffle iron.

4. Cook until golden brown and serve hot.
